Volunteer Positions at Philip Aziz Centre Print E-mail

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available at PAC. You can join our volunteer team in the following capacities:

Community  Support Volunteer:

The Philip Aziz Centre is a community-based hospice in Toronto providing practical, emotional and spiritual support to children and adults living with AIDS, ALS, cancer and other life limiting illnesses. We are seeking volunteers willing to join us in making a difference by providing hospice care in their home .Your time, compassion and commitment can help make someone’s journey with serious illness more manageable and meaningful. Minimum age requirement is 18 yrs. Community support volunteers must participate in the Philip Aziz Centre 30 hr. training program and commit for a minimum length of one year post training. Orientation and training provided.

Children’s Hospice Care Volunteer:

The Philip Aziz Centre provides training for volunteers to work with children in their homes and relieve some of the physical and emotional stress of care giving for both parent and child, thereby improving their quality of life together. The Children’s Home will be an extension of our current services offered. Interested volunteers must have taken the 30 hr core training & have worked with adult clients to qualify for this additional 24hr training.

Spiritual Care Volunteer:

Spiritual care is an integral part of the Philip Aziz Centre and we currently offer additional training for volunteers who are interested in this type of support.  Volunteers are required to be unconditionally spiritually supportive and will encourage a sense of spiritual wellbeing with our clients requesting this type of support. Interested volunteers must have taken the 30 hr core training with and served for 1 year with adult clients to qualify for this additional spiritual care training.  Volunteers will report directly to our Spiritual Care Chaplain for accountability, guidance and training.

Special Events Volunteer:

To participate and assist in special events held by PAC.  PAC holds 3-4 Special Events a year to fundraise for our Families and Children’s Programs.  We invite you to participant or volunteer with our events.

Office Help Volunteer:

To help with various office duties during regular work hours. Computer skills and office experience.

Training and Workshop Assistant:

To assist staff with duties related to the preparation and delivery of training. Workshops are offered during the day and evenings.

Future Opportunities When Children’s Home Opens

Gardening/Floral Volunteer:

Work in the gardens during the Spring/Summer/Fall months to maintain the beauty of our outdoor landscaping. All year long, to add warmth to our surroundings by making floral arrangements and decorating the House. Orientation and training provided. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Kitchen /Household Volunteer:

Plays an important role in maintaining the feeling of home for the families. Responsibilities include providing assistance to staff and families in the kitchen, helping with light housekeeping duties as required. Kitchen / household volunteers must be at least 18 yrs. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Knitting/Sewing Volunteer:

Making, creating blankets, legacy quilts and other supplies required for the guests and their families to enhance their level of comfort during their stay. Volunteers may work from home or off site; projects will be assigned as needed. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Maintenance/Handy person:

The main responsibilities consist in repairing toys, equipment and general upkeep of household requirements. One regular shift per week. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Massage Therapy Volunteer:

PAC will continue to strive to enhance the quality of life for the guests and their families during their stay. Volunteers with current certification will perform massage therapy. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Memory Box Artists:

Important role in assisting with memory building. The volunteer memory box artists, create painted memory boxes for the bereavement program. Experience as a painter required. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Photographer:

Important role in assisting with memory building. The volunteer photographer takes photos, as requested by families. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Reception Volunteer:

This position will involve meeting, greeting and screening visitors to the home. The reception volunteer must be at least 18 yrs. Training provided. Pre-requisite: attend a volunteer orientation session.

Speaker’s Bureau Volunteer:

To speak on behalf of PAC at various community events and organization meetings to increase awareness of pediatric hospice palliative care services. To provide tours of Children’s Home to visitors who have booked an appointment to visit the house. Speaker’s Bureau volunteers have prior knowledge and volunteer experience at PAC. Training will be provided.
